Sometimes the infatuation Apple brand evangelists feel is a bit too much for me. I’m not so proud to re-count the nightmarish experiences I’ve had with random Mac-heads in airports – but that’s another story for another time.

This picture gives you an idea of what unbridled brand loyalty can do. In this particular case, an APple fan in Japan “branded” his crop of Fuji apples with the Apple trademark, iPods and Apple/Heart marks by adhearing stickers to the fruits while they were rippening. You can read more about it on the PSFK blog.

was it seth godin that talked about the japanese idea of ‘otaku’ in one of his TED talks a few years ago? how can brand create more passionate, unbridled brand loyalists? i get a bit annoyed by the over-the-top, sometimes in your face apple love. don’t get me wrong, i’m a big fan. i’m always will to share my 2cents when a friend asks me my POV on apple vs everything else. i’m not “me-casting” my love for apple like this person tho. that’s taking it to another level. perhaps beyond ‘otaku?’
btw, i keep all the packaging and display it proudly in my garage. hard for me to part w/such beautiful design. it’s really for my own pleasure. is that strange?

I have a grudging respect for all things Apple. In fact, I was an early adopter of Mac in our agency and my partner is still a Mac-adict. And, I’m with you on their packaging and design, it’s brilliant.
On the other hand, I’ve had more than one bad experience with a condescending Apple-aficianado looking down his nose at my PC. I find it all very annoying and enough to keep me from buying an iBook (or whatever their called nowadays) for myself.
Kind of like “reverse brand equity” if there is such a thing.
Thanks for the comment.
